The Legion 5 Pro from Lenovo is a gaming laptop with style and power. From the information we have so far about this machine after it was unveiled at CES 2021, we can tell you it has a stylish design, up to par spec, and good battery life. Lenovo has brought more updates to the Legion 5 Pro, as it gets the latest AMD Ryzen 5000 series processor and Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 30 GPUs.
Unlike the Legion 5 with 15-inch and 17-inch models, and a base price of $769. The Legion 5 Pro only has the 16-inch version with a 165Hz refresh rate and costs $999. It comes with the 16GB RAM option and up to 2TB storage.
The Legion 5 Pro does a great job at cooling, with a bigger intake vent and additional exhaust vents. Lenovo called it the Coldfront 3.0 thermal management.
Build and Design
The Legion 5 Pro will be made available in Stingray White and Storm Grey colors. It will also have blue, white, and 4-zone RGB backlit keyboards. The Legion 5 Pro chassis feels almost the same as a 15.6-inch version, measuring 14 x 10.4 x 1. Inches and weighing 5.4 pounds.
On the Legion 5 Pro, Lenovo used a gaming-oriented design that is reminiscent of the Y series, and it has the Legion logo lighted upon the lid. The look is very modern, as it has a relatively smaller chin and thinner bezels. It still has room at the top for a camera and a shutter cover for privacy.
Although not enough was said about the build, I have a feeling it keeps the plastic build, with the better-quality construction reserved for the Legion 7.
Display
With only a 16-inch display option, it has a 2500 x 1600 resolution in a 16:10 aspect ratio. It has a 165Hz refresh rate, supports Dolby vision, and gets up to 500 nits of brightness. The display is VESA DisplayHDR 400 certified and supports Nvidia G-Sync, while it covers up to 100% of sRGB color space.
Keyboard And Touchpad
The keyboard on the Legion 5 Pro has a pleasant feel. The Truestrike keyboard is not only punchy when you type, it also has good travel but could be better. The layout of the keyboard is good. It gives a feel closer to that of a ThinkPad keyboard, although not as good.
Compared to other Legions, the keyboard on the Legion 5 Pro is quite comfortable. It has four-zone RGB lighting and you can customize it through the Vintage app from Lenovo.
The touchpad is larger than what you will find in regular Legion laptops, as it is built to offer better control when you are not using the external mouse.
Performance
The Legion 5 Pro was announced to be powered by AMD’s Ryzen 7 5000 series, and GeForce RTX 30-series GPU from Nvidia. It is yet to be seen if Lenovo will announce Intel-powered versions of the Legion 5 Pro. It also comes with the option of 2TB storage and 16GB RAM.
Connectivity
When it comes to ports, the Legion 5 Pro has enough as the large backside allows for enough. On the left, there is the single Type-C USB port and the headphone jack. Right side features Type-A USB port and the webcam killswitch button.
On the back, there is an additional trio of Type-A USB ports, a Type-C USB port, an HDMI port, and the Ethernet port. Sadly, the Legion 5 Pro doesn’t have the Mini DisplayPort, so it is not easy to connect a VR headset.
Battery Life
According to Lenovo, the Legion 5 Pro battery can last for between 7-8 hours after a full charge, which is quite impressive if true. As of this moment, we are yet to confirm this claim, as we cannot run a battery test for a pre-production unit. When we get a post-production unit, we will have accurate details after testing.
Webcam Kill Switch
Although the webcam on this laptop brought some blurry images, the e-shitter, which is the kill switch, delivers as expected. This type of switch is not common on gaming laptops.
Conclusion
The Legion 5 Pro is expected to deliver a top gaming experience, especially for e-sport gamers.
