HP has been doing great things with this laptop, and it gets better because of the new AMD Ryzen 4000 series CPU inside of it. It is swift and has excellent performance, and there is also a new design. The HP Envy x360 13 is one of the first laptops to come with AMD’s Ryzen U series processors.
It comes in a slim, thin and stylish chassis and gives good performance. You will also be getting a high-quality screen, a comfortable keyboard and an auto webcam privacy filter. It is inarguably one of the best in the range of affordable 2-in-1 laptops.
Design
What Makes it Work
This laptop is a tiny 13-inch laptop, but it is very attractive looking. It is housed in a black aluminum casing and a full HD IPS display—which is the only display option. It is a pretty well-built laptop, and except for the plastic touchpad, every part of the laptop is made of aluminum. The 360 hinge seems pretty durable, and overall it has a sharp and minimalistic look that also gives it a premium look.
At 1.3kg, this laptop is lightweight and feels almost non-existent when you carry it around, even with the power adapter. Right below the screen, you will see two exhaust vents—although only one works. My guess is it was added, so the laptop does not look asymmetrical.
For an ultrabook, this laptop has a pretty decent port selection.
On the left:
- a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A port
- a microphone/headphone jack
- a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C port
On the right:
- a micro SD card
- an AC smart pin
- USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A port
Overall: A COMPLETE MACHINE
Display
What Makes it Work
The x360 13 is 13.3-inches with WLED backlit screen and multi-touch support. The display is protected by the corning Gorilla Glass NBT, which adds to its durability. It also boasts 1000 nits brightness and covers 100 percent sRGB color space. However, its glassy panel could get a little reflective. Using it in a place with more light sources will be an irritating experience. Yet, even when you are outdoors, the laptop still gets very bright.
This laptop also implements the HP SureView privacy screen filter panel. This automatically minimizes the viewing angles to keep your sensitive content private. You can turn it on and off with the F1 key.
Overall: MADE FOR THE ELEMENTS
Keyboard and Touchpad
What Makes it Work
The keyboard is a full-sized Chiclet style, backlit, with a pale gold accent. It gives a good typing experience and does not rattle much. It has decent key travel, and is effortless getting used to. The single color backlight keycaps come with a two-step illumination level and even the lowest level of the backlight is enough to enhance the key visibility.
There is a dedicated LED indicator for volume, mic, and camera keys. It also has a biometric fingerprint reader for security purposes. Embedded with Windows Hello certified, it reads your fingerprint fast and with great accuracy.
What it’s Lacking
The plastic touchpad is okay, but it cannot compete with the MacBook Pro or the XPS 13. It supports the Haptic precision driver, and the multi-finger gesture works fine. Additionally, the integrated left and right keys work fine, although they have a noticeable plastic feel.
Overall: Missing that little something
Performance
What Makes it Work
This model comes with:
- Intel Core i7-1165G7 CPU
- 8GB DDR4 RAM
- 512GB M.2 NVMe SSD
This setup makes everyday tasks super easy, mainly if you create content or write. It showed no signs of stress even with multiple tabs running on Chrome, light photo editing, and Word documents running in the background.
Although it does not have a dedicated GPU, its integrated Intel Iris Xe Graphics is impressive. It didn’t heat up or show distress during video editing and gaming. To further optimize the performance of this laptop, you can switch between different performance profiles under the HP performance center.
Overall: FOR THE WORKING CREATIVE
Battery life
What Makes it Work
Although the 51-watt hour battery does not sound like much, it is pretty impressive. It provided up to 9 hours of usage of regular tasks like Chrome or making a presentation. You will not have to worry about looking for a power outlet while you are out.
Overall: MADE FOR THE WORKING DAY
Final Verdict
All in all, the HP x360 is a great 2-in-1 affordable laptop that will get you through your everyday tasks relatively quickly. It is light, portable, and powerful: making it an excellent choice for students, professionals, and content creators. I only wished that the touchpad was a little better, and the viewing angles are not really what I expected to see. But overall, I think it is a solid ultrabook, especially if you are on a budget.
