The Samsung Galaxy Fold is the current king of foldables, but the Motorola Razr has come with a strong challenge to dethrone it. Both models have a chance to become best selling phones in the foldable’s department. The Motorola Razr goes back in time to bring back it’s iconic design for the flip phone and re-engineers it into something for the present age. It doesn’t take the tablet-like foldable approach, rather it cuts into half the size of the normal smartphone screen size when folded. The Samsung Galaxy Fold approached the foldable from the tablet screen size angle. Rather than fold vertically like the Motorola Razr, it folds horizontally.
While the Samsung Galaxy Fold’s idea is to create more screen space when opened up from the fold, the Motorola Razr is about reducing the phone’s size when not in use. Both phones are foldables but have different approach and principles guiding them. The Samsung Galaxy Fold attempts to bridge yet gap between normal screen sized phones and tablet while the Motorola Razr is more concerned about reducing size when not in use.
Both phones appeal to different needs and have areas where one is better than the other.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold is the size of the standard smartphone when folded but expands into more spaces of screen size when the fold is opened. The phone was released the second time in September 2019 after initial failures, most notably it made some changes to the screen. When folded, it is narrower than most android smartphones, but expands into its 7.3-inch max display when unfolded Inside the fold, atop the screen is a pair of camera used mainly for video calls, and this compliments the small lens in the front and the three at the back, meaning that you can take pictures from different angles.
The Motorola Razr is thicker when folded, as it shrinks into its 14mm frame. However, the Samsung Galaxy Fold is thicker when folded at 15.5mm. When folded, the Motorola Razr screen reveals the 2.7-inch front screen and a 16MP camera at the bottom, which is also available to take a selfie instead of the 5MP at the top of the screen in the interior.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold comes with an AMOLED display, while the Motorola Razr opts for the P-OLED display. Both have lower resolutions compared to the conventional smartphones. However, both have small screens at the front for previewing when folded and the display is sharper. The Galaxy Fold has a 4.6-inch 720 x 1680 screen on the front while the Motorola Razr has a 2.7-inch 800 x 600 front screen size.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold comes with a Snapdragon 855 chipset, 12GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage, which makes it the faster and more powerful one of both phones. The Motorola Razr comes with the Snapdragon 710 chipset, 6GB of RAM, and 12GB storage.
When it comes to battery life, the Samsung Galaxy comes out top once more with a 4380 mAh battery capacity while the Motorola Razr is a disappointing 2500 mAh.
Both phones did greatly in accomplishing what they set out to do, with the Galaxy Fold successfully addressing the needs of users that require more screen size but want a smaller frame when not in use. The Motorola Razr is half the size of a standard smartphone when folded, which means it will sit greatly in the pocket and suits users with small hands.
