Design
The ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 3 comes with all the ThinkPad Goodness that you would expect from a ThinkPad. The X1 Extreme Gen 3 offers four layers of carbon fiber with impact resistant and cool friendly feel. You can expect a 12 military-grade quality from the X1 Extreme Gen 3, which means you can take it anywhere you want and not worry about durability.
The Carbon Fiber material gives it a matte black finish with a comfortable feel when touched.
The Thinkpad X1 still feels tactile and comes in the very familiar ThinkPad-style keyboard layout and key-design.
The screen on the X1 Extreme Gen 3 only opens to a 180 degrees angle, which doesn’t make it a convertible but makes it easier to use the pen with the touchscreen option.
Display
The display option of the X1 Extreme Gen 3 is one noticeable aspect of the series that Lenovo has changed up a bit. The X1 Extreme Gen 3 now comes with an option for two Full HD (FHD) IPS screen (low and high brightness), wide gamut IPS 4K screen, and 4K OLED touch screen with pen support.
The wide gamut IPS 4K screen offers a more natural feel and more color accurate for photo editing and video production. The color calibration software that comes with the laptop doesn’t offer as much difference when it is switched from native (very vibrant) to photo mode (RGB) doesn’t make the color much better.
If you are a user that want this laptop for business and media consumption, then nothing can beat the OLED 4K touch screen. For users that prefer a color-accurate screen, then the wide gamut IPS 4K screen is the way to go.
The OLED touchscreen comes with a WACOM pen with average palm rejection when used on the screen.
Upgradability
The Lenovo X1 comes with two RAM slots that make it possible to use anything from 8GB of DDR4 RAM to 64 GB. Two M.2 SSD slots that support up to 2TB of storage each make it possible to load the laptop with 4TB of M.2 storage.
The X1 Extreme Gen 3 comes preinstalled with 1TB M.2 SSD.
Port Selection
There are 2X USB-Type C Thunderbolt ports on one side of the laptop, and two legacy 3.1 Type-A USB ports on the other side, and a MicroSD port.
Battery
The battery on the X1 Extreme Gen 3 is an 80 WHr battery that should provide you up to 5-6 ½ hours of battery life depending on the configuration you choose (screen-wise). The 4K OLED touch screen option will result in lower battery life.
Performance
The processors on the X1 Extreme Gen 3 perform well in any configuration. To get the best out the laptop, it is best to pair the Nvidia GTX 1650 Ti with a Core i7 or higher processor.
The fans are not exactly that big, and on a heavy workload, you should expect temperatures reaching 90 degree Celsius. On normal workloads, the X1 Extreme Gen 3 runs pretty quiet.
Final Verdict
In terms of design, there isn’t much, if any change from the last generation. Most of the changes you see in the X1 Extreme Gen 3 comes in the form of Specs updates.
Lots of users are still not happy with the fact that the base version of this laptop still comes with brightness as low as 300 nits. The more expensive versions go as high as 600 nits depending on the configuration. Also, the X1 Extreme Gen 3 would have been better if it came updated with a 16:10 aspect ratio screen.
Overall, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 3 is a light laptop that performs well as a mobile workstation for business people and creators. You can trade laptop in any condition for cash with us to help you to purchase the new Lenovo Extreme.
